Russian Medical Advice, Part Two

July 18, 2011

This Saturday was a gift to me from Calliope.  Because I think she’s been reading my blog posts and has been kind of annoyed at the low quality of content lately.  (Calliope doesn’t understand that sometimes even the best journalists make lists as fillers for traffic. C.F. All of The Huffington Post.) So Mr. B and I were at my parents’ for my dad’s birthday party and all was well and good until my mom almost murdered him.  I mean ...

A Russian fairy tale: Tori and the firebird

March 23, 2010

Source. Once upon a time, there was a princess named Tori, who lived in the small but happy Russian kingdom of Zakabyakino.  There, she was engaged in learning about the art of taming the zhar-ptitsa, which happened to live in her kingdom but was very rare and wild, but enormously valuable for its feathers, which the tamer of the bird could cultivate.  Somehow, the talent to find and feel where the zhar-ptitsa was had been passed down to Tori through ...

Here I am, trying to plan a weekly menu, because that’s what all the homey-wifey websites recommend you do to keep the Arab-Israeli Menu Planning War of 1967 from breaking out in the household.   I witnessed this first-hand on numerous occasions when I’ve been too lazy/tired/homicidal after work to cook dinner (this happens at least twice a week.) On these occasions, when I was single ...

Millions of babies, the Holocaust, and gender segregation. It’s the weekend!

January 31, 2010

I spent this Saturday morning being told I was the byproduct of a silent Holocaust, so my weekend went really well. It started when our friends had a baby, which, amongst other things, caused my mom to shift into overdrive: Our friends just had a very cute baby girl and they invited us to the Hebrew naming ceremony at an Orthodox-ish synagogue.  I immediately sensed that this would be a bad experience from the minute we walked in and I ...
