My new HTC Incredible came in the mail yesterday and I don’t think I could be any more excited if Gad Elmaleh came in the mail (but only if the shipping was free.)
This is not my phone, but engaget’s, because, unfortunately, out of all of the things he can do, he can’t take pictures of himself. Also, I don’t wear paisley ties. Mostly.
Anyway, now that I finally have a smartphone, I can be plugged into the intertubes like I’m on crack. It’s very exciting. The only thing that’s not exciting is that he doesn’t have a name yet, and I need your help.
I’ve named inanimate objects since I was very little. And, apparently, I’m not alone. I named my parent’s house Greta when I was in 7th grade, because it just felt right. She is so sunny and cheery and proper, that she couldn’t be anything else. My computer’s name is Iyar and my car is Cecilia.
So, I’m trying to come up with a name for this phone. I know he is masculine because phones are very rarely feminine. Even iPhones. I know that he gets stuff done quickly and quietly and is very powerful. He is also friendly. I, on the other hand, am slightly clinically unstable because phones don’t have human features. Neither do dogs.
However, I won’t apologize for being crazy, because names are important and this phone needs a name asap, and I need your help. Suggestions? Also, do you think the people at Nameberry would banish me if I started posting about this in the forums?

You should just ask the phone outright what his name is. I am not picking up on his vibrations from this end of the intertubes, otherwise I would be happy to help.
I name objects, too! My laptop is Albert the second. Named after Albert, the first laptop, named after Albert Peirot. http://halemo.net/info/albertperot/
You should name her Pazit. Or Shirel.
I say you should name him “Hank” … Can’t you just imagine the phone at a saloon somewhere in old-time Texas?

I am with Nonna : Abraham , Isaak , Jacob or Moses. Nothing less seem to fit judging by your admiration of him.
Thank you for your suggestions, everyone (especially Mom-useful as always.) I’ve decided to go with Amit. http://nameberry.com/babyname/amit Because! Not only is it a name that’s popular in both Hebrew and Hindi, it also multitasks as a boy and girl’s name in Israel, which will be useful for foiling the Mossad. “Is that a masculine or feminine cell phone?! No one knows! So mysterious. ”
And yes, these are the kinds of conversations I have in my mind on a daily basis.
Should’ve gone with Steve.
Now you should install Gowalla and make it post notes to twitter about from places you’re checking in to. Seems to work well for me on vacations.
You know, I’ve thought about using Gowalla and/or Foursquare and the location concept seems cool, but I can’t get past the safety aspect of it (pleaserobme.com and whatnot) and am still trying to work out the balance. Why did you choose Gowalla over Foursquare?
Privacy issue is a bit of a concern, but I try not to abuse it. And it doesn’t constantly report the location, only when I ask it to.
I went with Gowalla mostly for aesthetic reasons. They know design. At the same time FourSquares and design shouldn’t really be used in the same sentence, even though they did get better lately.
I think FourSquare is more popular, but Gowalla serves my needs perfectly and looks good doing it.
