The Step-Motherland

September 9, 2009

I’m back from the motherland!  Well, not really the motherland, because I technically wasn’t born there.  But it’s like a motherland to me because Israel is the Jewish homeland or whatever.  So I guess you could say Israel is like the step-motherland because Israel gets custody of me every couple of years.  And only on the weekends. Anyway, the reason that I went this time is because A)I was in desperate need of vacation to the point  where I was ...

Guest Post: Now Boarding…..rows Aleph thru Zayin

September 7, 2009

Note: Can you believe I’m still in Israel? Do you miss me? Ok, so this isn’t really a guest post.  It’s more like I bugged Extremely Funny Blogger and Amazing American oleh (immigrant to Israel) Benji Lovitt to write a blog post while I was in Israel, but he was probably too busy being a Big Deal Comedian in Israel to come up with a post (either that, or he didn’t want his name associated with someone who spells humus ...

Guest Post: On Being Twenty-Three (And Adopting a New Life Philosophy)

September 4, 2009

Note: I first met Julie on Twitter, but also in person at our DC Jews Tweetup.  Julie is pretty cool because not only does she work in social media, but she eavesdrops on people speaking Russian because many times, they can’t tell that she speaks it. Julie was born in Moscow, Russia and moved to the United States with her mother shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. She spent her formative years in Lexington, Massachusetts and attended the University of Maryland where ...

September 3, 2009

Note: This guest post is by @Krolik, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in person for coffee before she ran off to her ballet lesson and I ran off, embarassed that I’ve never taken ballet and a bit sad that my parents denied me pink tutus.  She has a lovely blog, Project Wombat, about raising her son, and is very funny.  I’ve never had political posts before, so let it be said that I don’t necessarily agree or disagree ...

Guest Post: Backhanded Compliments

September 2, 2009

Note: This guest post is by Jane Charney, who I had the good luck of meeting on a Russian Jew trip to Israel about four years ago.  She is thoughtful, intelligent, passionate about her Jewish identity and always has something interesting to add to the debate.  Which is why I hesitated to have her guest post.  We wouldn’t want to up the standards of this website. From toga on Flickr.  This is the closest I could get to backhanded. Get ...
