Lucy from the Narnia series. She frikkin rocks. Brave, kind, generous, and able to kick some ass. And then heal people.
Mary Poppins
Anne of Green Gables
The crazy old witch in The Dark Crystal (ok, not a main character, but still a favorite)
Sarah in Labyrinth (boy am I dating myself, so old)
And now, of course, Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series

Ha! Xena! Maybe the tacky costumes disqualify her? But now that you bring her up, I kinda want to watch again.

Agreed. Love Pippi! And had forgotten about her. A very innocent heroine, but a very clever one at that.

Xena, The Warrior Princess. Tacky costumes, cheesy storyline but she's great at kicking some asses. I still want to be like her, especially at morning traffic;)

I was convinced that I'd grow up to be D'Artagnan when I was little. I read The Three Musketeers at the age of 8, I think, and by 11 practically knew the book by heart. The one great female role model from books that I can think of is Pippi Longstocking -- she's smart, funny, strong, and independent (and has a monkey and can lift a horse, which are great qualities in a superhero).

I am actually a bit embarrassed because I've never fully seen Blazing Saddles, but if it's like other Mel Brooks movies, I can totally see this heroine. Thanks for this example, and of now a movie I need to catch up with.

Ok, this may be a bit off color for some, but...I think Lili Von Shtupp from Blazing Saddles is great! She knows who and what she is, she uses her 'tools' to succeed and she makes no moves to pretend that she is anything but what she created herself to be. She is confident and savvy and realistic.

"Here I stand, the goddess of desire / Set men on fire / I have this power. / Morning, noon, and night, it's dwink and dancing / Some quick womancing / And then a shower. / Stage door Johnnies constantly suwwound me / They always hound me, with one wequest. / Who can satisfy their lustful habits? / I'm not a wabbit. / I need some we...... est."

I suppose showing little girls the Kill Bill movies is a bit much. What about Sigourney Weaver as Ripley? If "Mr. B" hasn't made you watch Aliens yet, tell him I am VERY disappointed in him.
