I'm re-reading "Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins. I'd be quite willing to make the conjecture that "natural selection will favor people who have the genetic makeup to shield themselves mentally from other people's suffering (because such people will be happier, and will be more likely to reproduce)". Our lack of empathy might actually be genetic.

Having said that, I do feel ashamed after reading your post to have spent so much time this weekend feeling depressed about my favorite coffee shop in Bangalore shutting down.

I actually just saw this today:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8040471.stm

It's about how the Motherland statue in Stalingrad is in danger of collapsing because of an unstable foundation. It's really a shame too, since it's possibly the coolest looking statue in the world. Apparently there are various English translation of the name of the statue, but I like to think that the closest one is "Fuck you Germany!" Interestingly, when I visited the American History Museum recently, I found that the World War Two exhibit summarized the entire eastern front onto a single sign. Granted, the exhibit wasn't meant to be a complete summary of the war, but I still found it to be a rather glaring omission. It reminded me of when I went to a museum in England that described the war almost entirely in terms of the British forces.

Nothing great was ever created by anyone who never looked above his own parapet. Alas, how soon are sacrifices forgotten and freedoms squandered.
